In a nutshell: NHS North Yorkshire and York PCT developed an infection control workbook to tackle the difficulty of educating a large number of staff over a large geographical area about infection control practices. The workbook is linked to the Key Skills Framework, proves cost-effective and does not require staff attendance at face-to-face training sessions. Positive leadership at ward level and above is a prerequisite for effective action to control infection. Senior clinical leaders need a highly visible presence and clear role boundaries and responsibilities. Team stability and morale are linked to improved patient outcomes. Organisational mechanisms for supporting training, appraisal and clinical governance are determinants of effective practice and successful change. Rates of infection are linked to workload, in terms of nurse staffing, bed occupancy and patient turnover.

Tackling bacteraemia using a standardised training programme

In a nutshell: South Central is piloting an innovative way of tackling bacteraemia using a standardised training programme for cannulation and maintenance of peripheral lines.  The project is funded by NHS Education South Central.  The trusts involved in the project have emplyed various methods to disseminate training including employing a designated project nurse to deliver IV training, developing a training video that can be viewed on mobile phones and creating an e-learning site to share training resources.  The results of the project will be reported in Summer 2009.
